The most primary and basic cards for my game is the 3 sized fishes: small, medium and large. I discussed them with Mat, my illustrator. There was a bit of back and forth about how they should be designed and what expressions each should have. I thought perhaps the expressions should be correlated somehow to the mechanics of the game. The big fish is the hardest to obtain so I figured he should have a sly look to him. I liked the sketch that Mat made but he looked a bit intense and angry and wanted to soften him since this was a family friendly kind of game. For my medium fish, I ended up asking to take the charming smile of the small fish sketch he drew and transpose it on the medium fish. Lastly, I suggested the small fish have a scared expression since he is a little-un and easy pickings. Mat also had a good idea about each fish looking back at the player to make it more engaging. I agreed it would be. However, I made an exception to the last fish since I think the player might feel a little remorse picking off the small fish if he was looking back at the player with a look of fear. So, I said let’s keep his spacey stare :). Mat is now working on finalizing each fish. They are all looking great so far!
